Becoming a Newport Township Firefighter

Newport Township FPD utilizes the NW Lake County Fire Training Cooperative 

The academy generally runs from July to March, two evenings per week and several Saturdays and Sundays. This is an Illinois State certified course combining classroom and practical evolutions and live fire training.

 

Subject titles include:

  • Safety/Protective Gear

  • Fire Behavior

  • Extinguishers

  • Self Contained Breathing apparatus (Air-Packs)

  • Hoses/Couplings/Carries/Loads

  • Sexual Harassment

  • Ladders/Aerials

  • Building Construction

  • Ventilation

  • Rescue

  • Forcible Entry

  • Fire Control/Suppression

  • Water Supply

  • Nozzles/Fire Streams

  • Basic Emergency Medical Training

  • Salvage & Overhaul operations

  • Protective Systems (sprinklers)

  • Incident Command Accountability Systems (FF safety)

  • Communications & Alarm Systems

  • Public Education

  • Ropes & Knots

  • Inspections

  • Hazardous Materials Awareness

  • "Saving Our Own"

Additional classes required:

  • Hazardous Materials Operations

  • Technical Rescue Awareness

  • Certified Emergency Vehicle Operations (Drivers Training)

Becoming a Newport Township Paramedic

Each EMT has the option to advance to the Paramedic level. Much consideration must be given to this endeavor as it is an intense program.

 Class runs from August to June, two evenings per week and one Saturday per month. Prerequisites are; EMT, CPR, Anatomy & Physiology, and a comprehensive math and reading test.

 

  • 450 hours of classroom

  • 250 hours of in -hospital clinical time in various departments

  • 250 hours of ambulance ride-time where certain advanced skills must be demonstrated with a seasoned paramedic.

  • Successful completion of local and state written and practical exams.
