Interested in becoming a volunteer Firefighter? Looking to learn the skills required to become a firefighter and emergency medical technician?
We sponsor candidates through the Northwest Lake County Fire Academy each year. If you are interested in learning about becoming a Firefighter, applications are available at the fire station Monday - Friday during normal business hours. You may also download an application by clicking on out 'downloads' button on the left of this page.
Applicants must be 21 years or older, have obtained a high school diploma or GED, be of good morale character, be a U.S. citizen, posses a valid drivers license, and have a good work ethic. Applicants do not need prior fire or emergency medical services training as you will be sent to class if you successfully pass the selection process.
Candidates must attend an orientation to learn of the time commitment, pass a written, oral, and physical ability exam, and undergo a background check and physical examination.
Preference is given to candidates within the fire protection district, and applicants from outside the fire protection district will be required to sleep in the station on their duty nights.
Applications are taken throughout the year, those on file will be reviewed in April to begin the process with an orientation.

Becoming a Newport Township Firefighter
Newport Township FPD utilizes the NW Lake County Fire Training Cooperative
The academy generally runs from July to March, two evenings per week and several Saturdays and Sundays. This is an Illinois State certified course combining classroom and practical evolutions and live fire training.

Becoming a Newport Township Paramedic
Each EMT has the option to advance to the Paramedic level. Much consideration must be given to this endeavor as it is an intense program.
Class runs from August to June, two evenings per week and one Saturday per month. Prerequisites are; EMT, CPR, Anatomy & Physiology, and a comprehensive math and reading test.
- 450 hours of classroom
- 250 hours of in -hospital clinical time in various departments
- 250 hours of ambulance ride-time where certain advanced skills must be demonstrated with a seasoned paramedic.
- Successful completion of local and state written and practical exams.
